Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing the size and weight of the breasts by removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. This surgery is typically performed on women with overly large breasts (macromastia or gigantomastia) that cause physical discomfort such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, skin irritation, or difficulty in physical activities. Breast reduction can also be done for aesthetic reasons, improving breast shape and proportionality to the body.

  • Relief from physical discomfort: including back, neck, and shoulder pain.
  • Improved breast shape and proportion: for a more balanced appearance.
  • Ability to engage in physical activities more comfortably: Enjoy greater ease and comfort during exercise and daily activities.
  • Better fitting clothing and bras: Experience improved fit and comfort in your wardrobe.
  • Enhanced self-confidence and body image: Feel more confident and positive about your appearance.
  • Anesthesia: Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia, ensuring the patient is comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
  • Incision: The type of incision used depends on the size of the breasts and the amount of tissue to be removed.
  • Reshaping the Breast: After the incision, the surgeon removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. Liposuction may also be used to remove fat from areas around the breasts. The remaining tissue is reshaped to create a firmer, more lifted breast contour.
  • Nipple Repositioning: The nipples and areolas are often moved to a higher, more natural position on the breast. The areolas may also be resized to better fit the reduced breast size.
  • Closing the Incisions: Once the breast tissue has been reshaped and excess skin removed, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures. In some cases, drains may be placed to help remove excess fluid during the healing process.
  • Recovery: Recovery from breast reduction surgery typically takes several weeks. Patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which subside gradually. Compression garments or surgical bras are usually worn to support the breasts during healing, and physical activity is limited for about 4-6 weeks.
  • Scarring: Scars from incisions are permanent but usually fade over time. The extent of scarring depends on the technique used and individual healing.
  • Changes in sensation: Temporary or permanent changes in breast or nipple sensation can occur.
  • Breastfeeding challenges: Some women may have difficulty breastfeeding after breast reduction surgery, depending on how much tissue is removed and the surgical technique.
  • Asymmetry: While surgeons strive for symmetry, minor differences in size or shape between the breasts may persist.
  • Infection or healing complications: In rare cases, complications such as infections or poor wound healing can occur.
