Torsoplasty

A Torsoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to contour and reshape the torso, addressing loose skin, excess fat, and sagging tissue around the abdomen, flanks, back, and chest. It is often performed on individuals who have experienced significant weight loss, leading to loose skin and poor body contour, or those looking to tighten and sculpt the midsection for a more toned appearance. The procedure can involve various techniques depending on the area being treated, including abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), back lift, lateral thigh lift, and liposuction.
Torsoplasty can be part of a body lift procedure or done on its own, and it aims to create a smoother, firmer, and more youthful appearance of the torso. It is especially beneficial for patients who have undergone bariatric surgery or massive weight loss and want to remove the excess skin that diet and exercise cannot fix.

  • Comprehensive contouring of the torso: Including the abdomen, back, and flanks.
  • Removal of excess skin and fat: For a smoother, more sculpted appearance.
  • Improved comfort: And ability to wear fitted clothing.
  • Boost in self-confidence and body image: Especially after significant weight loss.
  • Can be combined with other body contouring procedures: Such as arm lifts or thigh lifts, for a full-body transformation.
  • Anesthesia: Torsoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia, as it involves extensive tissue removal and repositioning.
  • Incision Placement: The surgeon makes incisions around the torso, which can vary depending on the specific areas being addressed. These incisions are usually positioned to be as hidden as possible under clothing or within natural body creases.
  • In some cases: A belt-like incision around the waist may be used, particularly when combining a tummy tuck with a back lift or lateral thigh lift.
  • Excess Skin and Fat Removal: The surgeon removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen, back, and flanks. Liposuction may be used to further sculpt the area and enhance the overall contour of the torso.
  • Tissue Tightening and Repositioning: After removing the excess tissue, the remaining skin is tightened and repositioned for a firmer, smoother appearance. In some cases, muscles in the abdominal wall may also be tightened (as in a tummy tuck).
  • Closing the Incisions: Once the desired contour is achieved, the incisions are closed with sutures, and drains may be placed to reduce the risk of fluid buildup during recovery.
  • Recovery: Patients are typically required to wear compression garments to support the healing process and reduce swelling. Recovery times vary, but most patients can resume light activities after about 2-4 weeks, with full recovery taking several months.
  • Infection: A potential risk with any surgical procedure.
  • Scarring: While surgeons aim to place incisions in discreet locations, some scarring is inevitable. Over time, scars tend to fade but may remain visible.
  • Seroma or Hematoma: Fluid accumulation or blood pooling under the skin, which may require drainage.
  • Wound Healing Issues: In some cases, the incisions may take longer to heal or could reopen.
  • Changes in Sensation: Numbness or altered sensation around the incision sites, which may be temporary or permanent.
  • Asymmetry: While surgeons strive for symmetry, there may be slight differences between the two sides of the body.
  • Blood Clots: Due to the extensive nature of the surgery, there is an increased risk of blood clots, particularly in the legs.
